Casinos in Massachusetts
There are three non-tribal casinos and one cruise ship based in Massachusetts.
The largest casino in Massachusetts is Encore Boston Harbor with 2,800 gaming machines.
The second-largest casino is MGM Springfield with 2,550 gaming machines.
Commercial Casinos in Massachusetts
Massachusetts has three land-based casinos including:
- Encore Boston Harbor in Everett located 5 miles north of downtown Boston.
- MGM Springfield located 92 miles west of Boston and 26 miles north of Hartford, Connecticut.
- Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville located 36 miles southwest of Boston and 22 miles northeast of Providence, Rhode Island.
A cruise ship sailing out of the Port of Boston is the NCL Dawn. The ship offers onboard gambling via slot machines and table games when traveling in international waters.
Tribal Casinos in Massachusetts
In 2012, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe have an approved tribal-state gaming compact to offer tribal gaming in Southeastern Massachusetts. This Region C includes the counties of Bristol, Plymouth, Nantucket, Dukes, and Barnstable.
Subsequently, construction started on The First Light Resort & Casino in Taunton. However, progress has slowed due to lawsuits. Construction has been on hold since mid-2016. It is uncertain whether the casino will ever open.
Another tribal casino may yet open in Massachusetts as it would not require a state gaming license but instead be subject to the federal IGRA. The Aquinnah Cliffs Casino located in Martha’s Vineyard would offer 250 Class II, bingo-style competition games. However, it, too, has also been subject to lawsuits which has delayed its completion.

In January 2020, Encore Boston Harbor has the highest player win percentage. However, for the prior five months, Plainridge Park had the highest payout win percentage.

SPRINGFIELD — MGM Springfield and the state’s other two casinos – Encore Boston Harbor and Plainridge Park – were built to never close for cities that never sleep with 24-hour gambling, dining and drinking.
But starting Friday night they’ll shut down the gambling floor, bars and restaurants at the early hour of 9:30 p.m. under new COVID-19 restrictions announced earlier this week by Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker.
The new rules go into force Friday, Nov. 6.
This new curfew – which also applies to bars and restaurants outside casino complexes – is meant to stop the current coronavirus spike but the Massachusetts Gaming Commission acknowledged at its meeting Thursday morning the hardship the state is imposing.
© Hoang 'Leon' Nguyen / The Republican/masslive.com/TNS 7/13/2020 - Springfield - Gamblers wearing face masks return to the slot machines at MGM Springfield on Monday as the casino reopens after 4-months shuttered by COVID-19.“We know that the later hours are so important to their business,” said Gaming Commission Chairwoman Cathy Judd-Stein. “We can say it’s part of a greater good. The casinos have to be part of a puzzle here in the response to what is a sustained uptick.”
She said Baker is following the science.
“Informal social gatherings around entertainment s are problematic, at least that’s what the data shows,” she said.

Capt. Brian Connors, commanding officer of the state police Gaming Enforcement Unit said the curfew presents the challenge of getting gamblers who’d been trying to get in the last of their play to exit the facility in an orderly manner while observing social distancing and mask rules.

“Understanding there might be a crush” he said.

He said officers from the state police and from the Gaming Commission will be on hand at the three casinos this weekend.
Loretta Lillios, interim director of the commission’s investigations and enforcement bureau/chief enforcement counsel said coronavirus is rare among workers at the three casinos. They commission has been told of only cases among casino employees. Contact tracing links those COVID positives to family and social gatherings, not the workplace.
“We did not see any concerning patterns of multiple employees in same division testing positive” she said.
